Krakatau Eruption: Ministry Assures Full Flight Ticket Refunds

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation has stated that passengers affected by airport closures can receive full ticket refunds. Director General of Air Transportation Lukman F. Laisa said the policy applies to passengers whose flights were canceled due to operational disruptions caused by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.

"Regarding flight cancellation or refund, 100 percent reimbursement applies," Lukman said, as quoted by Antara on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Lukman emphasized that the 100 percent refund policy serves to protect the public, ensuring passengers do not incur financial losses from cancellations enforced strictly for flight safety.

Previously, Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi urged airlines to promptly notify passengers about canceled flights. This measure aims to prevent travelers from crowding terminals unnecessarily.

According to Dudy, airlines should send cancellation notices electronically through passengers' registered emails or phone numbers. Beyond notifications, authorities expect the refund process to be handled digitally to expedite passenger assistance.

The Ministry of Transportation instructed all airlines to uphold passenger rights by providing clear information regarding schedule revisions, cancellations, and reimbursement procedures.

The ministry temporarily suspended operations at several airports following volcanic ash dispersion from Mount Anak Krakatau. The decision was taken after receiving technical forecasts from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding atmospheric hazards to aviation.

Airports that temporarily halted operations include Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung, as well as Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Greater Jakarta.
