Lampung Moves Schools Online as Anak Krakatau Ash Spreads Across Province

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Lampung Provincial Government is taking anticipatory measures to safeguard the health and safety of students and educators following the recent activity of Mount Anak Krakatau and the spread of volcanic ash, which has been observed reaching several areas within Lampung Province.

This policy is outlined in the Lampung Governor's Circular Letter Number 150 of 2026 regarding the conduct of teaching and learning activities amidst the impact of volcanic ash, issued in Bandar Lampung on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Through this circular, all educational institutions in Lampung Province—ranging from early childhood education (PAUD) and kindergartens to elementary, junior high, and senior/vocational high schools, as well as special needs schools (SLB)—are required to shift teaching and learning activities from in-person classes to online learning from home.

This policy is effective from Monday, September 7, to Tuesday, September 8, 2026, subject to ongoing assessment of conditions on the ground as well as monitoring results and recommendations from the relevant technical authorities.

This shift in learning arrangements serves as a preventive and protective measure to ensure the continuity of education while minimizing the risk of exposure to volcanic ash for students and the school community.

The circular emphasizes that shifting teaching and learning activities to an online format does not mean educational activities have ceased. School principals and teachers are required to continue performing their duties—working from school—and ensure that the learning process proceeds effectively via available digital platforms.

Educational institutions are also instructed to ensure that all learning materials are successfully conveyed to students during the period of remote learning from home.

Meanwhile, parents or guardians are asked to provide supervision and support during online learning sessions and to ensure that students actively participate in the learning process.

Lampung Governor Rahmat Mirzani Djausal emphasized the importance of taking anticipatory measures in response to environmental conditions caused by the spread of volcanic ash.

The public—particularly students, teachers, and parents—is urged to limit outdoor activities while exposure to volcanic ash persists.

If outdoor activity is unavoidable, people are advised to wear masks or appropriate respiratory protection to reduce the risk of exposure to volcanic ash.

The Lampung Provincial Government also reminds the public to maintain environmental cleanliness and to refrain from taking action based on unverified information.

Local authorities will continue to monitor the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau and the impact of volcanic ash dispersion to inform future policy decisions, including those regarding the conduct of teaching and learning activities in the Lampung region.
