TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump announced on social media that a three-day ceasefire would take place from May 9 to May 11 in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
"This Ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each Country," he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Trump said he had made the request for a halt in fighting, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed.
"Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War," Trump said, adding that "talks are continuing."
Moscow and Kyiv had announced their own unilateral ceasefires, but each side also accused the other of breaching the truces.
US-led efforts to broker a peace agreement have long been stalled.
Zelenskyy Orders Army Not to Attack Moscow Parade on May 9
Following US President Donald Trump's initial announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a three-day truce had been arranged with Russia.
"That is why today, within the framework of the negotiating process mediated by the American side, we received Russia’s agreement to conduct a prisoner exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000. A ceasefire regime must also be established on May 9, 10, and 11," he wrote on X.
Zelenskyy also ordered the Ukrainian army not to attack Moscow's Red Square during the WWII Victory Day parade on May 9.
"For the duration of the parade (from 10:00 am (07:00 am GMT) Kyiv time on May 9, 2026), the area of Red Square shall be excluded from the plan for the use of Ukrainian weapons," said a decree on the presidential website.
Russia Confirms 3-Day Ceasefire with Ukraine
Russia has agreed to US President Donald Trump's initiative for a ceasefire with Ukraine from May 9 to May 11, as well as to carry out a prisoner exchange during that period, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said.
"I confirm the acceptability for the Russian side of the initiative just proposed by US President Donald Trump, concerning a ceasefire for a prisoner-of-war exchange between Russia and Ukraine," he told journalists.
Trump announced on social media earlier that the ceasefire would last from Saturday through Monday.
