UN: Lebanon Crisis Deepens Despite Ceasefire

2 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that the humanitarian situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate despite an ongoing ceasefire. The crisis is being further exacerbated by attacks on healthcare facilities, which have claimed the lives of numerous medical personnel and paramedics.

Over the past 24 hours, more than 100 attacks were recorded, while 87 deaths were reported over the weekend alone.

According to Lebanese Ministry of Health data cited by OCHA, at least 2,846 people have been killed and 8,693 others injured since the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated on March 2.

On Monday, May 11, 2026, the ministry reported that two paramedics were killed and several others wounded in airstrikes targeting healthcare facilities in Qalaway and Tibnin, southern Lebanon. OCHA noted that the paramedics were tending to victims of a previous strike when the incident occurred.

Since the onset of the escalation, the World Health Organization has documented 158 attacks on healthcare facilities, resulting in 108 deaths and 249 injuries. OCHA emphasized that attacks on medical and humanitarian workers are unjustifiable, as they cripple the healthcare system and block civilian access to emergency services.

OCHA also noted that three hospitals and 41 primary healthcare facilities remain shuttered, while others are functioning only at limited capacity. In southern Lebanon, six hospitals have yet to resume maternity services that were suspended due to the ongoing hostilities.

Over the weekend, Israel issued evacuation orders for several towns and villages across southern Lebanon and the Nabatieh Governorate. This has triggered a fresh wave of displacement, mounting further pressure on shelters and host communities for refugees.

According to OCHA, refugees, particularly vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, face severe limitations in accessing nutritious and diverse food, significantly heightening health risks.

Despite these immense obstacles, humanitarian organizations continue to provide aid alongside the Lebanese government. To date, health partners have facilitated hospital treatment for over 585 patients, administered more than 18,000 vaccine doses through primary centers, and provided over 4,300 prenatal care services.

In the food security sector, distributed aid has reached a total of over 8.4 million food portions.

However, OCHA maintains that humanitarian needs far outpace available funding. Of the total 308 million US dollars requested for the emergency period from March to the end of May, only about 41 percent has been secured. OCHA warns that essential services, including healthcare, clean water, and sanitation, face imminent disruption if funding gaps are not promptly closed.
