Victor Lai Ends Jonatan Christie's Indonesia Open Title Dream

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian men's singles star Jonatan Christie finished runner-up at the BWF World Tour Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2026 after losing to Canada's Victor Lai in the final at Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, on Sunday, June 7.

Playing in his first Indonesia Open final, Jonatan was defeated in straight games, 19-21, 8-21, as Lai claimed the biggest title of his career.

The opening game was closely contested, with both players trading points throughout. Jonatan briefly took control, but a series of unforced errors allowed Lai to stay level.

After the mid-game interval, the Indonesian fought back to level the score at 13-13, setting up a tense finish. However, Lai remained composed in the closing stages, capitalizing on several mistakes by Jonatan to move ahead and earn four game points at 20-16.

Jonatan narrowed the gap, but the Canadian held firm to take the first game 21-19.

The second game proved far more one-sided. Jonatan attempted to dictate play early on, but Lai's solid defense and consistent shot-making quickly put him in control. The Canadian raced to a 6-1 lead and maintained his advantage throughout the game.

Struggling to find his rhythm, Jonatan trailed 5-11 at the interval as Lai continued to exploit openings and force errors from the Indonesian.

After the break, the momentum remained firmly with the Canadian. Jonatan was unable to reduce the deficit as Lai combined sharp court coverage with precise shot placement to extend his lead.

Lai surged to a commanding 19-8 advantage before reaching match point at 20-8. Jonatan's return sailed wide on the next rally, handing Lai a 21-8 victory and the Indonesia Open title.

The defeat denied Jonatan a maiden Indonesia Open crown on home soil and ended Indonesia's hopes of ending a 14-year men's singles title drought at the tournament. The last Indonesian to win the men's singles title at the Indonesia Open was Simon Santoso in 2012.
