TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A forest and land fire in the Way Kambas National Park area, East Lampung Regency, Indonesia, was extinguished on the night of Saturday, August 22, 2026. Approximately 200 joint personnel remain on standby to conduct wetting operations and prevent the fire from reigniting.

"Thank God, the fire in the Way Kambas area has been successfully brought under control, and the hotspots have been extinguished," said Lampung Regional Police Chief Inspector General Helfi Assegaf in a written statement on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Personnel began extinguishing the fire around 16:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). Helfi stated that the joint team faced difficult terrain and strong winds during the firefighting operation. They finally managed to extinguish the hotspots around 19:30 WIB.

According to Helfi, the personnel did not immediately leave the site after the fire was put out. The joint team carried out wetting operations and combed through the undergrowth and dry vegetation to ensure there were no embers that could potentially trigger a reignition. "Our focus now is ensuring the situation is completely safe," Helfi said. Personnel also conducted patrols and monitored the affected area to anticipate the emergence of new hotspots.

Helfi stated that the police would continue to coordinate with relevant agencies to handle and prevent forest and land fires in Lampung. According to him, managing such fires requires a rapid response and inter-agency cooperation.

"We will continue to strengthen this synergy, both in field operations and preventive measures, so that potential fires can be anticipated early," Helfi said.

As of Sunday, August 23, 2026, joint personnel remain on standby in the Way Kambas National Park area. They are continuing wetting operations, area sweeps, patrols, and monitoring to ensure the fire does not flare up again.
