Indonesia in Talks With Iran Over Pertamina Tankers Stuck Near Hormuz

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is continuing discussions with Iran to seek a solution for two Pertamina-operated oil tankers that remain stranded near the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing regional tensions, Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno said on Thursday.

Speaking after a meeting with the House of Representatives' Commission I at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta, Havas said Indonesian authorities remain in contact with their Iranian counterparts regarding the vessels.

“We continue to engage with the Iranian government and maintain discussions with the relevant authorities,” he said.

The two tankers, Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro, both operated by PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), remain in the Arabian Gulf and have yet to transit the Strait of Hormuz due to security concerns in the region.

Havas said progress toward resolving the issue would largely depend on developments in the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

“If the political situation escalates further, we will have to wait and see,” he said.

According to Havas, insurance has become one of the main obstacles, as many insurers are reluctant to cover vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened geopolitical risks.

He explained that insurers are generally willing to provide coverage while ships remain in relatively safe waters but often refuse to assume the risks associated with entering areas considered high-risk.

Beyond insurance concerns, decisions on whether the vessels can proceed also depend on assessments by ship captains and approval from cargo owners, who prioritize the safety of crews and cargo.

“There are many factors that must be aligned. It is not simply a matter of obtaining assurances from government authorities,” Havas said.

Foreign Minister Sugiono previously said on April 22 that negotiations concerning the two tankers were still ongoing.

He noted that efforts to resolve the matter had been complicated by conditions within Iran, where policy decisions at the central level do not always translate smoothly into implementation on the ground.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world's most important energy shipping routes, handling a significant share of global oil and gas exports.
