TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government, alongside the management of the Kota Tua (Old Town) area, is mapping out several developmental concepts for the area's revitalization program, which features an electric tram line and a Low Emission Zone (LEZ).
"One of them is that we will also build a Low Emission Zone (LEZ). So, we will limit vehicle traffic once everything is complete," said Denny Aputra, Head of the Jakarta Old Town Area Management Unit, during an interview in Kota Tua, Jakarta, on Sunday, June 14, as reported by Antara.
Denny noted that this concept aligns with efforts to elevate Kota Tua into a world-class tourist destination while preserving and strengthening its historical identity.
Furthermore, the Jakarta administration plans to revive the tram system that once defined the historic area. This modern iteration, however, will run entirely on electricity.
"The original tram lines will be the track, but it will be electric in the future," he explained.
According to Denny, the proposed tramway is scheduled to traverse the main Old Town tourist belt and connect various strategic hubs, including the vicinity of Sunda Kelapa. Nevertheless, the final route map is still pending official government approval.
He explained that this development is a cornerstone of the comprehensive Kota Tua revitalization project, which aims to blend historical heritage, tourism appeal, and eco-friendly transit.
Alongside the electric tramway and the LEZ initiative, Kota Tua will benefit from enhanced multi-modal transit connectivity, integrating the MRT, Transjakarta networks, and Jakarta Kota Station.
Denny added that the goal of the revitalization is to revive the area's historical legacy while upgrading the visitor experience.
"Pak Governor sees this as an early mode of transportation, rebuilding its history, and ensuring the revitalization of Kota Tua in 2029 to become a Jakarta destination, a global city," he said.
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to prioritize the completion of the Lebak Bulus-Kota MRT project, which remains on track for an early 2029 debut.
