Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption Brings Light Ashfall to Banten Coast

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Light volcanic ash rain from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau began hitting the coastal areas of Banten, especially around the Pasauran Volcanic Observation Post (PGA) in Anyer, Serang Regency, on Saturday night.

Head of the PGA Anak Krakatau Post in Pasauran, Deni Mardiono, in Serang, Saturday night, said the distribution of volcanic material was carried by gusts of wind moving towards the eastern region or the coast of Banten.

"Currently, the Pasauran post is affected by a very thin layer of volcanic ash. CCTV footage shows a lot of scattered ash. The ash is influenced by the wind direction, so it's likely the wind is coming from the east, carrying it to the Banten coast," Deni said, as quoted by ANTARA.

He explained that the potential spread of volcanic ash depends entirely on wind direction. The intensity of the ash falling around the monitoring post is currently considered very light.

Meanwhile, based on direct monitoring of conditions on the ground as of 8:40 p.m. local time, volcanic activity in the Sunda Strait waters was still intense. Images of the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption appeared to show a fiery red light accompanied by lightning.

The eruption also continued to emit a rumbling sound and loud booms simultaneously. The sound waves were so intense that they caused the doors, windows, and cupboards inside the observation post to vibrate.

Although the eruption was accompanied by thin ash rain and loud bangs, Deni confirmed that the level of volcanic activity on the mountain had not increased compared to before.

"Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Alert Level III. Residents and tourists are not allowed to approach within a three-kilometer radius of the crater," he stressed.
