TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto aims to expand the reach of Indonesia's digital payment system to India. If realized, users of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) could make seamless transactions in the world's most populous nation.
Prabowo outlined the plan during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. "To strengthen cooperation in the financial sector, we welcome the progress of discussions on a cross-border QR payment linkage between Indonesia and India," he said.
The Gerindra Party chairperson hopes that integrating the digital payment systems will make cross-border transactions smoother and more efficient. Additionally, he noted that the move would bolster the financial resilience of both nations.
Under the proposed partnership, Indonesian citizens will eventually be able to use QRIS for transactions across India. Conversely, users of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will also be able to transact in Indonesia through the interconnected network.
During the event, Modi welcomed the ongoing talks. "We are very pleased that India's UPI payment system will be integrated with Indonesia's platform," Modi said.
Modi stated that the policy will ease business operations in both countries. "This step will facilitate business activities as well as travel for the citizens of both nations," he added.
PM Modi is currently on a three-day visit to Indonesia. He has been in Jakarta since Monday, July 6, 2026. Alongside his agenda in the capital, Modi is scheduled to travel to Yogyakarta to visit the Prambanan Temple.
President Prabowo officially welcomed Modi with a state ceremony at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday. The two leaders also held a closed-door bilateral meeting alongside their respective delegations, followed by a joint luncheon.
A series of strategic memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed at the Merdeka Palace. The high-level meeting ultimately yielded 16 agreements between the two nations.
