Prabowo Threatens License Revocations for Companies Behind Forest Fires

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto intends to revoke the business permits of companies involved in forest fires. He stated that he would not tolerate them.

Prabowo claims that he will not show favoritism when dealing with companies that cause forest fires. "Anyone, any corporation, if there is a slight indication that they are involved in ordering to burn, we will revoke their permits. We will revoke all corporate licenses," said Prabowo in a virtual meeting on handling karhutla, on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The Gerindra Party Chair asked law enforcement officials to investigate indications of company involvement in forest fires. He stated that, in addition to the perpetrators in the field, corporations providing burning instructions should be held accountable.

Prabowo also deployed intelligence to uncover these allegations. "Especially if there are corporations giving orders, I ask the police and the prosecutor's office to investigate. Intelligence, investigate, yes. If there are indications, report immediately, we will immediately revoke," said the former defense minister.

Prabowo visited provinces affected by forest fires in the past few days. After visiting West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan on August 22, 2026, he visited Riau and South Sumatra on August 24, 2026. Prabowo led a coordination meeting for handling karhutla in these regions.

Prabowo urged comprehensive extinguishment and stronger prevention to prevent recurring fires every dry season. "The prevention system must be strengthened. This includes permanent surveillance and early detection of hotspots starting from boreholes, reservoirs, and other water sources, as well as the readiness of villages prone to karhutla. Prevention must be implemented long before a fire appears," said Cabinet Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya in a written statement.
