TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian men's volleyball team made history by winning the 2026 AVC Men's Cup after defeating South Korea 3-0 (34-32, 25-16, 25-23) in the final in India on Sunday night, June 28, 2026.
The victory also avenged Indonesia's 3-0 defeat to South Korea during the Group A preliminary round of Asia's prestigious volleyball tournament. For the title match, head coach Reidel Toiran made changes to his starting lineup.
Rama Fazza replaced Fauzan Nibras, while Putra Hidayatullah came in for Ahmad Gumilar. Boy Arnez Arabi, Hendra Kurnniawan, and Farhan Halim, meanwhile, retained their places in the starting lineup.
Indonesia's triumph in the 2026 AVC Men's Cup answered the doubts of many observers.
"Alhamdulillah (Praise to God), it feels like a dream. Many people doubted this team, but the players answered with an extraordinary achievement, even surpassing the federation's target," Indonesia assistant coach Nur Widayanto said, as quoted from a statement released by the Indonesian Volleyball Association (PBVSI) media team on Sunday night.
Nur admitted the Red-and-White squad struggled in the opening set.
"In the first set, we were caught off guard by South Korea's difficult serves. As a result, our attacks were not at their best and were easily stopped by their blocks," he said.
However, the situation changed in the second set. According to Nur, Indonesia's aggressive serving began to disrupt South Korea's defense and created more scoring opportunities.
"From the second set onward, many of our serves troubled the opponents, especially those from Boy Arnez and Farhan Halim. From there, our blockers started producing points, while our back-row players successfully turned defensive plays into counterattacks," he said.
Indonesia's success in capturing the 2026 AVC Men's Cup title was also attributed to Reidel Toiran's tactical decisions. Nur said the Cuban coach read the match brilliantly by introducing Rama Fazza.
"Equally important was Coach Toiran's brilliant strategy," Nur said.
Rama, who entered as a key player, contributed numerous points through his attacks and serves.
"That substitution was truly successful," he added.
