Jokowi Confident PSI Will Win Seats in Indonesia's 2029 Parliament

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Former President Joko Widodo, widely known as Jokowi, expressed confidence that the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) will secure seats in Indonesia's parliament in the 2029 legislative election.

Speaking at a regional coordination meeting of PSI leaders in Tulang Bawang, Lampung, on Friday, June 26, 2026, Jokowi said the party has a realistic chance of surpassing Indonesia's parliamentary threshold if its members remain active in serving local communities.

"If we work together from the central leadership down to the district and village levels, I am confident that in 2029, regarding the issue of entering parliament, I do not want to get ahead of myself, but I dare to say that we will definitely enter parliament," Jokowi said.

He urged party officials at every level—from the central executive board to regional, district, subdistrict, and village branches—to become the driving force behind PSI's efforts ahead of the next general election.

Why Is Jokowi Confident?

Jokowi said PSI has built a strong organizational structure, pointing to the party's network in Tulang Bawang, which he said has been established down to the village level.

According to the former president, a well-developed grassroots organization is one of the key factors in winning elections.

"Organizational structure is crucial. If we have a political machine that reaches every village, it means we have a strong organizational capacity," he said.

Jokowi also praised PSI chairman Kaesang Pangarep, his youngest son, and local party leaders for organizing the coordination meeting and strengthening the party's grassroots network.

Despite his optimism, Jokowi stressed that a strong party structure alone would not guarantee electoral success.

He encouraged PSI members to build closer ties with local communities through everyday social engagement, such as visiting sick residents, attending funerals, and taking part in wedding celebrations.

"Actions like these will build a positive reputation for PSI," he said.

PSI failed to cross Indonesia's 4 percent parliamentary threshold in both the 2019 and 2024 legislative elections, leaving the party without seats in the national House of Representatives. It is aiming to enter parliament for the first time in the 2029 election.
