TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump said his country could seize control of the Strait of Hormuz and impose tariffs on shipping to ensure safe shipping, Fox News reported on Sunday, June 21, 2026, as cited by Antara.
Earlier that day, technical-level talks between Iran and the United States (US), mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, began in Switzerland.
"We might take over the strait if necessary," Trump was quoted as saying in the report.
"If they don't make a deal, we'll collect tolls," he added.
Trump said that in such a scenario, the US would take 20 percent of the oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier on Saturday, Trump also said that if a peace deal with Iran fails, the US could impose a fee on passage through the Strait of Hormuz as "reward for services rendered" and to recoup costs.
On June 18, Iran and the US electronically signed a memorandum of understanding ending the military conflict that had been ongoing since February 28.
The document also sets a deadline for the US to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports and a deadline for Iran to restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
