UK, France Say Ready for Strait of Hormuz Joint Security Mission

5 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The UK and France have stated their readiness to deploy a multinational military mission to help secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The statement was made on late Friday, July 3, 2026, amidst Iran's rejection of the presence of foreign military forces in that strategic waterway.

According to a report by Anadolu, the readiness was conveyed in a joint statement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. They emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz plays a vital role in the global economy, making maritime security in the region a shared concern.

"The Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for the global economy. Restoring safe transit for ships of all nations through the strait is a matter of global concern," the joint statement by Starmer and Macron read.

British-French Military Mission

The two leaders also mentioned that Oman has agreed to collaborate with London and Paris to ensure the safe passage of ships in its territorial waters.

Starmer and Macron also declared that the UK and France are ready to anchor or lead a broader multinational military mission to support freedom of navigation in the region.

"The United Kingdom and France reaffirm their shared commitment to regional stability, respect for the sovereignty of all states, and their willingness to maintain close cooperation with their partners in order to uphold global security, freedom of navigation and international law," the statement said.

Iran Again Rejects Foreign Military Presence

The Saudi Gazette reported that the announcement by the UK and France comes amid escalating tensions with Iran. Tehran has repeatedly rejected the involvement of foreign countries in maritime operations in the Strait of Hormuz and warned non-regional countries not to deploy military forces in the area.

Iranian officials consistently assert that the responsibility for maintaining security in the Strait of Hormuz lies entirely with the countries directly bordering the strait. Therefore, Iran believes that the presence of foreign military forces is unnecessary to secure maritime routes in the region.

On Saturday, July 4, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi reiterated the warning to non-regional countries not to carry out military activities in the Strait of Hormuz.

"The Strait of Hormuz is not a theater for extra-regional powers to display military force," said Gharibabadi on X. He emphasized that Iran, as the responsible and security guarantor in the strait, warns against any military activity in the waterway.

"As a responsible power and the guarantor of security in the strait, Iran warns against any military activity in this sensitive waterway," he stated.
