World Cup: DR Congo Reach Last 32 After Beating Uzbekistan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) national team advanced to the round of 32 as one of the best third-place finishers, after a comeback victory over Uzbekistan 3-1 in their decisive Group K match of the 2026 World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, USA, on Sunday, Western Indonesian Time.

According to FIFA statistics, as cited by Antara, Congo finished third and fourth in Group K with four points, while Uzbekistan finished with none.

Meanwhile, Colombia finished top of the group with seven points from three matches, while Portugal, nicknamed Seleccao das Quinas, finished second with five points.

Uzbekistan took the lead when striker Eldor Shomurodov scored in the 10th minute.

The goal was the only shot on target for Fabio Cannavaro's team throughout the match.

Trailing early on, Congo increased their attacking intensity and continued to pressure the opposing defense.

The African team, led by Sebastien Desabre, dominated possession and created chances after chances, but their finishing was fruitless until halftime.

Entering the second half, Congo's pressure became increasingly difficult to contain.

Their efforts finally paid off in the 68th minute when Yoane Wissa successfully converted a penalty to equalize the score at 1-1.

The equalizer boosted the Congolese players' confidence.

Just 10 minutes later, Fiston Mayele turned the game around with a goal in the 78th minute, giving Congo a 2-1 lead.

As Uzbekistan tried to rally, Congo secured the win in injury time.

Yoane Wissa scored his second goal in the 90+1 minute, tapping in a pass from Meschack Elia.

Congo dominated throughout the match, registering 19 attempts on goal, while Uzbekistan only managed three.

The match was also a closely fought affair, with a total of 22 fouls. The referee issued three yellow cards to Congolese players and two to Uzbekistan.

The 3-1 victory ensured Congo finished as one of the best third-placed teams in the group stage and qualified for the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan's chances of advancing further in the world's most prestigious football tournament were halted.
